"Tardy again I see, Miss (last name)." Mr. Kirkland sighs as you burst into the classroom, your hair wild, panting hard.
"Sorry...I missed...the...bus." you gasp out, trying to catch your breath.
"Well, make sure it doesn't happen again."
"Yes sir." you say, snapping a mock salute.
He sighs again and resumes his lecture as you make your way to your seat, running a hand through your hair, still panting slightly.
Note to self: Don't try to run all the way to school ever again. You think as you get settled in your seat, trying to pay attention to what Mr. Kirkland's saying.
A few minutes later though, you start to get distracted and begin doodling on the corner of your paper. Behind you, you hear others begin to get distracted as well, giggling and murmuring with each other.
As you doodle, you begin to daydream, counting the days until school gets out and you can spend your days with your friends and have enough time to eat breakfast and sleep in and....
"Miss (last name) and Mr. Jones!" Mr. Kirkland says sternly, jolting you back into reality. "Listen up!"
"Sorry." you grin sheepishly, hoping nobody could tell what you were thinking about. You don't bother looking for the other kid he called.
You know who Alfred Jones is. The most popular guy in school, loud, obnoxious, and always insisting that he's the hero. But for some reason, he's always cold and uptight around you.
"As I was saying," Mr. Kirkland continues, shooting you a look. "For this project, you will have partners, and I expect everyone to do their part. I will call out your name and your partners name. You will have to work together to complete this project."
You roll your eyes and hear people snort behind you. Everyone knows that at least one person will be a slacker and make their partner do all the work. You just hope that you'll get to pair up with someone responsible, like Ludwig or Elizabeta.
You twirl your hair as Mr. Kirkland calls out names, your mind wandering once again.
"(Your name) and Alfred Jones."
You shoot up in your seat, your eyes wide, oblivious to the envious looks of the other girls. Alfred always just sat around while his partner did all the work!
"What?!? We can't be partners!" You and Alfred say simultaneously.
"Too bad, you're going to have to be." Mr. Kirkland says and resumes calling out the rest of the names.
Alfred turns and glares at you. "This is all your fault."
You scowl. "How is this my fault?"
"If you had been paying attention, he wouldn't have put us together!"
"Me?!? You weren't paying attention either! Besides, he probably just stuck us together 'cause I actually do my assignment, unlike you."
"How would you know? I always do my homework!" he hisses, his blue eyes narrowed.
"No, you sit around and eat all day, Burger Boy."
"At least I'm not an anime freak like you!"
You spring to your feet, unaware of the fact that you've been shouting at each other. "You know what, Hero? If you can prove that you can work with me, then I'll pay you fifty dollars. If not, then you'll have to pay me fifty dollars."
He stands, his baby blue eyes boring into your (e/c) ones. You extend your hand and he takes it, shaking it roughly.
"You're on!" he growls just as the bell rings.
-----------------------------Time Skip to after School--------------------------
After your fight with Alfred you had been quiet most of the day, wondering what had happened exactly. Most of the time you were nice and hardly ever got into arguments, so it was a surprise to even you when you had started yelling at Alfred.
As you walk out the doors of your school, you see him waiting for you, leaning against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest.
"We can go to my house and start on the project." he says, straightening and starting for his house.
"Fine." you say indifferently, but you feel relieved. If you get in another fight you can just leave.
The walk to his house is silent and awkward. After what you and he said earlier, how are you supposed to be nice to him?
Finally you sigh and look at him walking silently beside you. "Look, I'm sorry for what I said earlier."
He doesn't look at you, just nods.
You become silent again until you reach his house, irritated that he doesn't offer an apology.
You wait as he unlocks the front door, following him as he walks in, shutting the door behind you.
"We can work in my room." he says flatly and heads down a hallway, not bothering to see if you follow.
You sigh and trudge after him, wishing you had just let him off the hook and done it yourself.
The two of you work quietly, not making eye contact and only talking when necessary. After an about an hour, you hear him clear his throat and stand, his hands in his pockets.
"Do you want a snack?"
"Uh...sure, thanks." You glance up at him, but he looks away, not meeting your gaze.
"Cool. I'll be back in a minute."
With that he strides out the door, leaving you alone.
You lean back against his bed, and close your eyes, wondering what the heck is going on.
You had never really talked to him before, but everyone said he was a really fun guy to be around.
Well I guess that's not the case. You think. At least, not around me.
Does he really think you're a loser? Sure, you're not the most popular, but you still have friends, and most people like you well enough.
While you sit brooding you look around his room and take in all the Marvel comics and video games strewn on the bed and desk, the super hero posters, and even a little Captain America action figure (doll).
A small smile tugs at your lips and you get to your feet, picking the figure up and chuckling when you notice that it even has a little shield.
"Where's the rest of the Avengers?" you say quietly.
"Why are you touching my stuff?"
You flinch and set down Captain America, turning around to face Alfred.
"Sorry." you mutter, looking down at your shoes.
He sighs. "It's fine dude. Just don't do it again."
You nod and take the bowl of potato chips he offers, sitting on the floor again.
"You look like him." you say after a minute, turning to look at him.
"Captain America. You look like him." you say, and you're startled when he grins.
"Yeah dude. I'm a hero, remember?"
You laugh. "Sure, Alfred, you're a hero."
He smiles and you feel as if that broke the ice. You begin to work again, but you don't feel so awkward this time.
After another hour, you stand and gather your stuff.
"We can work at my house tomorrow." you say, and he nods, leading you to the door.
You walk out onto the sidewalk, then you pause and turn to wave. "See you tomorrow."
He gives a small wave then retreats back into his house. You start for home, surprised that you aren't dreading tomorrow.
-------------------------Time skip to the day the assignment's due-------
During the week, you had gotten to know Alfred better and realized that what people said about him is true, he is a fun person to be around. While you worked everyday with him, you had slowly begun to open up and talk, laughing and joking about nothing.
You turn in your assignment, relieved that it's finally done, but sad that you don't get to spend time with Alfred anymore.
Through the class you keep glancing at him, but he either doesn't notice, or is ignoring you.
So you go through the day like normal, and after school you start for home, feeling bad that he doesn't want to hang out anymore.
"(Name) wait up! Where are you going?"
You turn and your eyes widen in surprise when you see that it's Alfred who's calling you.
"What do you want Alfred?"
He frowns. "I thought you were coming over to my house."
Now you're really confused. "Why? The project's over."
"So? I thought you were coming to hang out."
Then you remember your bet. He actually won! you think, surprised. You pull out your wallet. "I can just give you your money now, Alfred."
His frown deepens. "Is that why you think I want you to come?"
"Well, yeah. Isn't that why?"
His face falls. "I thought we were friends."
Your eyes widen again. "Y-yeah I guess we are."
He brightens again and does something you didn't think he would ever do. He hugs you. Your face turns red, but you hug him back.
"Actually, I thought we were more than friends." he whispers in your ear.
Your blush deepens. He likes you? Like, likes you likes you?
"Can I change the prize for the bet?" he asks, pulling back a little.
You look at him suspiciously. "Um, I guess. What is it?"
He grins mischievously. "Can I have a kiss?"
You feel your face flush, but you lift your face to his, giving him a light kiss on the lips.
"Were you planning this?" you ask, wondering how things had escalated so quickly.
He smiles. "Yep. The Hero always has a plan."
Sure you do. you think, but you take his hand and walk to his house with him.
Who knew school assignment were actually good for something?
